Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Palm trees bending in strong wind and rain against a pale gray sky above a single-story stucco house with a shingled roof and a sliding glass door.

Sizing a mini-split for this area starts with what the climate actually asks of the equipment, and that question has a real answer here. 94 severe weather events were recorded in Polk County, Florida between 2015 and 2024. At roughly the midpoint nationally, severe weather in this county is a real variable but not the dominant one shaping how a system performs over time. A contractor quoting an installation here will spend more time on load calculations and refrigerant line routing than on hardening the unit against storm exposure. Get that sizing wrong, and no amount of weather tolerance fixes the bill.

Interior utility alcove with a flexible foil duct running from a ceiling collar down to the floor, partly wrapped in white insulation, beside a gray electrical panel, with a white laundry basket of clothes on the floor and louvered closet doors at left.

The electrical panel is what a mini-split contractor prices around first in Polk County. Half the homes in Polk County, Florida were built in 1992 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built by that year was wired for the demands of its era, and a ductless system draws power on its own terms. If the existing service cannot carry the new load, the panel gets upgraded before the unit goes in, and that work changes the quote. The ductwork question does not apply to a mini-split, so what the electrical can handle is where the job either opens up or gets complicated.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway gray house with a dark shingled roof, showing two wall-mounted indoor air handlers connected by line sets to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad outside.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It delivers conditioned air directly into that space. The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and the components that do the heavy mechanical work.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small opening in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, removing moisture pulled from the air. A dedicated electrical disconnect is mounted near the outdoor unit as well.
