Sizing a mini-split in Washington County starts with what the system will actually face. 128 severe weather events were recorded in Washington County, Florida between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing condition of operation here, not an occasional interruption. A unit undersized for that load runs longer and harder than the manufacturer's ratings anticipate, and the compressor and refrigerant lines carry the difference. A contractor quoting an install in this county has to account for that pattern before settling on capacity.

A small closet with louvered bifold doors open, showing a plastic-wrapped insulated duct running from floor to ceiling in the corner, a gray electrical panel on the wall, and a white laundry basket with cloth on the floor.

Electrical panels in houses built for earlier decades of appliances and air conditioning were sized for what those decades asked of them. Half the homes in Washington County, Florida were built in 1990 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A licensed contractor quoting a mini-split here checks the panel before anything else, because the load a modern unit draws can exceed what the existing service was built to handle, and that gap is where the scope of a job changes. The ductwork question is usually simpler for a mini-split than it would be for a central system, but the electrical is not.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System Involved in an HVAC Installation

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with two rooms, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to a single outdoor condenser unit outside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall in the room being served, pulling room air across its coil and pushing conditioned air back in. The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the home on a pad or bracket, housing the compressor and the components that shed heat to the outside air.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small penetration in the wall to connect the two units, carrying refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, removing the moisture pulled from the air during operation.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your home.
